THE DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIX TRANSCENDENT PERFECTIONS
.
Anything a Bodhisattva undertakes in his or her training falls within the scope of the six transcendent perfections and is endowed with four distinguishing features, accompanied by the corresponding intention to accomplish infinite good. These four distinguishing features are:
• It is devoid of anything that runs counter to the respective transcendent perfection.
• It is supported and permeated by wisdom, in that it is free of any concept of subject, object, and action.
• It fulfills its function in bringing about others’ welfare.
• It brings beings to ultimate maturity on any one of the three levels of enlightenment.
.
CATEGORIES
.
Generosity and the other five of the six transcendent perfections can each be subdivided into six aspects:
• the generosity aspect, which is to introduce other beings to that particular transcendent perfection;
• the discipline aspect, which is to avoid anything that runs counter to it;
• the patience aspect, which is to be unmoved by difficulties in practicing it;
• the diligence aspect, which is to be joyful and make effort in practicing it;
• the concentration aspect, which is to keep the mind one-pointedly focused on the virtuous goal of that particular perfection; and
• 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 [𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙮] 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙤𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 [𝙞.𝙚. 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙨, 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 / 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮 / 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧-𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮].
.
There are thus thirty-six subdivisions in all.
These and other categories are explained in detail in the Sutra of the Fortunate Kalpa.

“Mindfulness should guide all your actions and your spiritual endeavors. Whatever you do, always apply three essential points: undertake the action with the intention of doing so for the good of all beings; execute it with perfect concentration, 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙤𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣; and finally, dedicate the merit you have created to the enlightenment of all beings.
