If, for instance, we had been thinking that phenomena were made of autonomous entities [parts], we will now understand that truly separate and intrinsically distinct entities could not relate with one another and thus could not come together to form a ‘body’ . If, at the other extreme, we believed that phenomena consist of single unitary entities such as a ‘body’, then we would not be able to distinguish any parts within it, such as form, feelings, volition, and so on – yet we have done so. The indisputable conclusion is that phenomena consist neither of truly separate, autonomous parts nor of singular entities.

[1] In brief, ๐ง๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฉ๐ง๐ช๐ฉ๐ [๐1 - ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ ๐ค๐ง๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ] is the domain of manifest phenomena, which arise through a combination of causes and conditions in a sequence of interdependent events. Now, since all phenomena are interconnected in this way, it follows that within the realm of relative truth the law of cause and effect is inescapable; positive and negative actions will inevitably result in happiness and suffering. Once the causes and conditions are present, nothing can prevent the result from being produced, just as in the spring if there are seeds in the ground and if the sun gives warmth and the rain moisture, flowers and fruits will appear. That is why we should always be aware of the potential of even the most minute of our actions. We should also realize how rare and precious is the opportunity to be able to practice the Dharma. We may have this opportunity in our hands now, but at any moment it could be taken away from us by death; we must not waste time. The constant thought of impermanence should spur us on to practice. As Lord Buddha said, ‘Of all footprints, the largest is the elephant’s; of all considerations, the foremost is to remember impermanence.’
