Madhyamaka Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta

Gilles Therrien @gileht 2023-03-07
[Madhyamaka and Advaita Vedanta]
Because of our dualistic language, our natural reflex is to see
#Madhyamaka Buddhism and #Advaita Vedanta as nihilism and eternalism [idealist monism].
But that is just ‘scratching the surface’.
Both are pointing at the same indescribable true nature of Reality as it is. Cont’d.
-
– 𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙮𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙖 insists on the 'no real existence / emptiness / T2' part of Reality as it is; without rejecting everything. It  does not affirm anything, because all dharmas are indescribable / inconceivable; not because they are completely non-existent / non-functional.
-
– 𝘼𝙙𝙫𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙖 𝙑𝙚𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 insists on the ‘no complete non-existence / T1’ part of Reality as it is; without grasping at anything in absolute terms, because Brahman / Consciousness is indescribable / inconceivable; not because it is something existent.
-
– 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 is inconceivable; beyond all opposites / dualities / extremes [Uopp] like: existence & non-existence, something & nothing, relative & absolute, Brahman / Consciousness & Emptiness, real & illusory, one & many, subject & object, Ground & manifestations.
-
Reality as it is is the Inseparability / Non-duality / Harmony / Union of the Two Truths [U2T]; Union of opposites [Uopp] like: existence & non-existence, something / everything & nothing; relative & ultimate; appearances & emptiness; Ground / Awareness & manifestations [UGM]; subject & object [U3S].
.
What was said about Madhyamaka Buddhism vs. Advaita Vedanta applies to #Mind-only vs.  #Madhyamaka schools; or #Rangtong vs. #Shentong schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
They insist on different points (not existence or not non-existence) but point to the same ultimate Reality as it is – beyond all concepts and dualities –.

“This 'Negation' and an Embrace of what Is as the expression of the infinite One
go in harmony with each other - a beautiful paradox within the play of the unchanging Truth.”

Comments on Ashtavakra Gita - Chapter 1

Gilles Therrien @gileht 2023-03-15

𝗔𝘀𝗵𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗸𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝘁𝗮 - Translated by Bart Marshall.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟭: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Latest version: https://ashtavakra-gita-gileht.blogspot.com/2023/03/c01.html

𝙅𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙠𝙖 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙:

1.1 [Question: What is my true nature / Self, the True nature & dynamic of Reality as it is?]

Master, how is
𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 [Wisdom / Truth / Reality as it is] to be achieved,
detachment [dispassion/ equanimity] acquired,
liberation [enlightenment / awakening] attained?

𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙩𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙠𝙧𝙖 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙:

1.2 [Answer: We need first to use various virtuous adapted skillful means more and more in accord with the two inseparable aspects of Reality as it is: interdependence & emptiness (the two truths); otherwise there will be too much resistance to the Truth]

To be free [liberated / enlightened / awaken],
shun the [impermanent] experiences of the senses like poison.
Turn your attention to forgiveness, sincerity, kindness, simplicity,
𝙏𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝 [wisdom / our true permanent nature / the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is / Ground].

1.3 [Second: We are not the impermanent, not even the imagined permanent irreducible elements / particles;
but more like the permanent pure Non-dual Awareness / Ground / Basis / Source / Suchness of all appearances.
Or, even better, our true nature & dynamic, the true nature & dynamic of all dharmas / opposites, is indescribable / inconceivable, beyond all opposites / dualities / extremes like: permanence vs. impermanence, existence vs. non-existence, difference vs. identity, separation vs. union, continuity vs. discontinuity, something vs. nothing, form vs. formless, right vs. wrong, duality vs. non-duality, one vs. many; subject vs. object vs. action / relation, cause vs. causality vs. effect; pure vs. impure, relative vs. absolute, appearance vs. emptiness, Consciousness / Ground vs. its manifestations, Reality vs. illusion / Maya, etc. It is OK to use these dualistic-concepts conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively as possible adapted skillful means / counterpoint / antidotes,  but never to grasp them in absolute terms. While using them as simple tools, we need to be always fully aware  of their true nature & dynamic -- because that is what ‘purifies’ them; that wisdom is what transmutes samsara into nirvana here & now. No need to accept / reject / change anything in absolute terms.
Self-Realization = Awareness of Awareness;
the Ground directly realizing its own inconceivable true nature & dynamic as it is]

You are not earth, water, fire or air.
Nor are you empty space [the irreducible elements].
Liberation is to know yourself as 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 [the Ground aware of itself]

You are 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚, 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙, 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨.

Right and wrong, pleasure and pain, exist in mind only. [Non-dual]
They are not your concern.
You neither do nor enjoy.
You are free.
.
.
(i.e. All dharmas / opposites / dualities … are like a Union of being empty of inherent existence [T2] <==> because of being conventionally dependently co-arisen (interdependent) relatively functional ever-changing impermanent appearances / tools / adapted skillful means / counterpoints [T1], merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind in dependence of its past experience / conditioning / karma [U3S] (physical, conceptual, mental; individual, collective, cosmic). And vice versa; one aspect / truth implies / enables / proves / supports / is in harmony with the other [U2T]. All dharmas / opposites / dualities … are like space, illusions, reflections, mirages, dreams, echos, rainbows, magical tricks: ‘There, but not there.’ [U2T]. Not really arisen / caused / existent / changing / ceasing, not completely non-arisen / non-caused / non-existent / non-changing / non-ceasing, not both together, not neither; not different / separate / multiple / dual, not identical / united / one / non-dual, not both together, not neither; not permanent / continuous / eternal, not impermanent / discontinuous / annihilated, not both together, not neither; not ‘this’, not ‘non-this’, not both together, not neither – for whatever ‘this’ is. So there is no independent / universal / absolute / inherently existing BASIS for any differentiation / acceptation / affirmation / seeking / doing / rejection / negation / abandonment / elimination / stopping / not-doing / change / improvement / increase or decrease / defilement or purification … of anything in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively.)

1.7 [Ignoring this is samsara / conditioning / suffering;
Being fully aware of this is nirvana / liberation / enlightenment / awakening / bliss]

You are the 𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄𝙨 [Self-realization], forever free.
Your only bondage is not seeing 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 [Ground].

1.8 [We, the Ground, are beyond the three spheres of any relation / activity – ex.
(i) subject / actor / perceiver / knower / owner, (ii) relation / action / perception / cognition-knowing / ownership, (iii) object / result / perceived / known / possession;
or (i) cause / producer, (ii) causality / production, (iii) effect / product;
or (i) subject-being-conscious, (ii) being-conscious-of, (iii) object-of-consciousness; etc. –]

The thought: “I am the doer [real subject / actor]” is the bite of a poisonous snake [Maya].
To know: “I do nothing (in absolute terms)” is the wisdom of faith.
(just doing conventionally, relatively, inter-subjectively)
Be happy.

God / Brahman / Self or the Union of the Two Truths

Gilles Therrien @gileht
[Reading Vedanta with a Madhyamaka eye: ]
When I read “You must dwell on God uninterruptedly
and be absorbed in the contemplation of His true nature.”
I understand
“I must constantly be aware of ‘the inconceivable true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is:
the Union of the Two Truths free from all extremes & middle(s)’.”

Madhyamaka Logic

Gilles Therrien @gileht 2023-03-09
#𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗵𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰: It is exactly because everything is dependently co-originated [T1] <==> that everything is empty of inherent existence [T2]. Interdependent with parts, causes & conditions, conceptual opposites, and the mind merely labeling / imagining it. [U2T]
.
Also, since everything is empty <--> because co-dependent [U2T] <==> then there are no real three stages of becoming for anything: (i) origination / birth / coming, (ii) duration / evolution / change, (iii) cessation / death / going. And no real 3 times: before, during, after.
.
Also, since everything is empty <--> because co-dependent [U2T] <==> then everything is like 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, illusions, reflections, mirages, dreams, echos, rainbows, magical tricks: ‘There, but not there.’: Not really existent, not completely non-existent, not both together, not neither.
.
Then everything is indescribable / 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: beyond all extremes & middle, beyond all dualistic conceptual proliferations, defining limitations, conditioning / karma; beyond all concepts, dualities, causality / change, form / matter-energy, space & time.
.
Beyond all opposites / dualities: Everything is not different / separate / many / dual, not identical / united / 𝗼𝗻𝗲 / non-dual, not both together, not neither; not permanent / continuous / eternal, not impermanent / discontinuous / annihilated, not both together, not neither.
.
Beyond all opposites / dualities: Everything is not unequal / impure / imperfect / ordinary / incomplete / bound, not equal / pure / perfect / divine / compete / free, not both together, not neither; not ‘this’, not ‘non-this’, not both together, not neither – whatever ‘this’ is.
.
Even beyond the 2 truths: Everything is not dependently co-arisen / existent [T1], not empty of inherent existence / non-existent [T2], not both truths together and in opposition [2T], not neither truth (something else beyond the two truths) [1T]. That is the Union of the Two Truths.
.
Since all is non-dual empty-appearances [U2T] <==> then there is not independent, universal, absolute, inherently-existing basis for any differentiation / judgment / acceptation / rejection / change / purification of anything in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively.
.
So there is nothing to ACCEPT / affirm / seek / do in absolute terms; nothing to REJECT / negate / abandon / eliminate / stop / not-do in absolute terms; nothing to CHANGE / improve / purify in absolute terms; just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively if it helps.
.
𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 / 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Then we may as well  perceive everything as primordially equal / one, pure, perfect, divine, complete, free, enlightened, the inseparable three pure kayas, the true Buddha, Brahman ... in the non-dual sense of those terms.
.
What purifies samsara is directly realising the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is, of all dharmas / opposites: the inconceivable Union of the Two Truths free from all extremes & middle about all dharmas [U2T]. No need to accept / seek / reject / abandon / change anything.
.
All dharmas are impermanent manifestations of the inconceivable unique all-pervading unborn unconditioned unchanging unceasing pristine Ground / Basis / Source / Buddha-nature / Genuine-emptiness / Brahman / Suchness / True nature & dynamic of reality as it is / Union of the Two Truths [U2T].

“All dharmas are empty of inherent existence, not really existent <==> but still conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional appearances, not completely non-existent <==> merely labeled / imputed by the mind.  = Inseparability / Non-duality / Union of the 2 Truths.”

More: Inseparability / Non-duality / Harmony / Union of the Two Truths [U2T]:
All dharmas / opposites (physical, conceptual, mental) are like a Union of being empty of inherent existence [T2], not really existent [T2] <==> because of being conventionally dependently co-arisen (interdependent) relatively functional appearances / tools / adapted skillful means / counterpoints [T1], merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind, not completely non-existent [U3S].
And vice versa; one aspect / truth implies / proves / enables / supports / is in harmony with the other [U2T].
-
All dharmas / opposites are
Not really existent, not completely non-existent,
    not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism),
    not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness);
Not really different / separate / many / dual, not completely identical / united / one / non-dual,
    not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism),
    not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness);
Not permanent / continuous / eternal, not impermanent / discontinuous / annihilated,
    not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism),
    not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness);
Not really dependently-arisen / caused / conditioned / changing / ceasing,
    not completely unarisen / non-caused / unconditioned / unchanging / unceasing,
    not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism),
    not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness);
Not ‘this’, not ‘non-this’,
    not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism),
    not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness) – for whatever ‘this’ is.
– Meaning all dharmas / opposites are indescribable / inconceivable;

    beyond all dualistic conceptual proliferations,
    beyond all defining limitations;
    beyond all conditioning / karma (physical, conceptual, mental; body, speech, mind;

-
Meaning there is no independent / universal / absolute / inherently existing basis to differentiate / oppose / accept / reject / change anything in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively.
-
= Non-duality / Inseparability / Non-duality / Harmony / Union of apparent opposites [Uopp / U2T-opp].
-
Apparent opposites like: good vs. bad, pure vs. impure, permanent vs. impermanent, existence vs. non-existence, real vs. unreal/illusory, identity vs. difference, one vs. many, dual vs. non-dual, body vs. speech vs. mind, subject vs. relation/action vs. object, the two truths themselves, the Ground and its manifestations, ‘this’ vs. ‘non-this’ for whatever ‘this’ is.

Reality as it is is beyond duality / manyness and non-duality / oneness

Either you grasp at extremes like 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, or you go to the indescribable / inconceivable, 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘀 / 𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 like: one vs. many, duality vs. non-duality, subject vs. object, permanence vs. impermanence, movement vs. stillness, existence vs. non-existence, the two truths, reality vs. non-reality, etc.

[Union of apparent opposites]
With all dualities / triad / quads / etc., the apparent opposites are always inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony [T1] <==> thus all empty of inherent existence [T2] [Uopp / U2T-opp]. One opposite cannot exist with/without the other. ex. No One / God / Ground with/without a diversity of manifestations / appearances / worshippers.
.
[Union of the Ground and its manifestations]
The Ground / Basis / Source / Buddha-nature / Genuine-emptiness / Suchness / True nature & dynamic of Reality as it is / Union of the Two Truths / Awareness / Consciousness / Brahman … and its spontaneous natural uninterruptible pristine manifestations / appearances are inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony [T1] <==> thus empty of inherent existence [T2] [UGM / U2T-GM].
.
[Mere adapted skillful means]
Everything in all sacred texts is at best mere useful adapted skillful means, pointers to the inconceivable, never to be grasped as an independent / universal / absolute / inherently existing truth / reality / method / goal. Reality is indescribable / inconceivable, beyond all concepts / dualities / opposites / extremes / activities …

The true meaning of ‘undifferentiated’

The Buddha @_Buddha_Quotes

Gilles Therrien @gileht
“Thus, all dharmas are not different / separate / many / dual, not identical / united / 𝗼𝗻𝗲  / non-dual,
not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism), not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness).
Not differentiated, not undifferentiated, not both together and in opposition / relation (dualism), not neither (something else beyond both / monism / oneness).
The Middle Way.”

More: One Ground, many manifestations / appearances:
All dharmas / opposites are manifestations of, inseparable from, the inconceivable 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 all-pervading timeless unborn unconditioned unchanging unceasing pristine Ground / Basis / Source / Buddha-nature / Genuine-emptiness / Suchness / Dharma-Element / Reality-limit. / True nature & dynamic of Reality as it is / Union of the Two Truths [U2T]. Also called Brahman / Atman / Self.
No manifestations without Ground; not Ground without manifestations.
No ultimate without relative, no relative without ultimate.
-
The Ground and its manifestations, the relative and absolute,
are inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony [T1], merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind [U3S] <==> thus empty of inherent existence [T2] [U2T-2T / UGM].

“Pransangika is the highest form of skepticism.” True. And not because everything is completely non-existent, non-caused, non-functional, useless, meaningless. But because the true nature & dynamic as it is of all dharmas is indescribable, inconceivable.“

More: “Pransangika is the highest form of skepticism.” True.
And not because everything is completely non-existent, non-caused, non-functional, useless, meaningless. But because the true nature & dynamic as it is of all dharmas is indescribable, inconceivable.“
-
Because everything is beyond all opposites / dualities;
beyond all extremes & middle,
beyond all dualistic conceptual proliferations,
beyond all defining limitations,
beyond all conditioning / karma (physical, conceptual, mental; individual, collective, cosmic);
beyond all description / conceptualisation, differentiation / discrimination / ranking,
causality / production, form / matter-energy, space & time.
-
So there is no absolute anything, just conventional / relative / inter-subjective truths.
-
Everything is empty of inherent existence, never really existent / caused / functional / absolute <==> because of being conventionally dependently co-arisen (interdependent) relatively functional ever-changing impermanent appearances / tools / adapted skilful means, merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind in dependence of its past experiences / conditioning / karma, never completely non-existent / non-caused / non-functional / useless / meaningless.

    – for whatever ‘this’ is.
.
Never this or that in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively.

Our dualistic conceptual mind co-creates / co-imputes / co-labels / co-imagines
things / characteristics / properties / qualities / relations / actions … in opposition to each other.
That is how it works; but that is not how reality is.
So we need to understand how our mind(s) / karma work(s)
in order to be able to transcend its illusory fabrications,
to become free from them –
not by judging them, not by accepting, not by rejecting, not by changing them;
just by directly realising their true nature & dynamic as it is is enough.

About Love, Death and God

Gilles Therrien @gileht 2023-03-22
“ABOUT LOVE, DEATH AND GOD

.

Krishnamurti:

  “We do not know what 𝗚𝗼𝗱 is, what 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 is, and what 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 is.

  These are the three amazing principles in life,

  of which we do not know, though we talk about them.

  So, the wise do not talk of them anymore.”

.

It is funny that he mentions those three principles
as a ‘summary’ of what is true wisdom, of what reality is.

.

This is the way I read those three principles:

.

‘𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚’ is a pointer to the 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚/ 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧-𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 of all beings / relations-actions / things (the three spheres – subject, relation / action, object –).

All beings / relations-actions / things depend on some other beings / relations-actions / things for their existence.

Ex. Beings depend on parents / family / collective / society to exist and evolve. They cannot exist by themselves.

In general, beings / relations-actions / things may depend on their components /  parts, their causes & conditions, their environment, their conceptual opposites, and especially on the mind merely labeling /  imputing / imagining them.

That is the first truth / principle about reality as it is – about everything, no exception at all.

‘𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝’ is a pointer to the 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 / 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 of all beings / relations-actions / things.

What goes up, must come down.

All beings / relations-actions / things are impermanent, or empty of inherent existence, exactly because they are dependent on other all beings / relations-actions / things for their existence.

Because those parts, causes & conditions … are themselves ever-changing, never exactly the same from one moment to the next. Even the most subtle subatomic particles are ever-fluctuating, ever-interacting with other particles.

Nothing exists by itself, independently, unchanging, eternal; thus everything is impermanent & empty of inherent existence.

That is the second truth / principle about reality as it is – about everything, no exception at all.

.

‘𝗚𝗼𝗱’ is a pointer to the 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 / 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙚 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 & 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨.

What is it? We cannot describe it, because it is the omnipresent, timeless, limitless, unborn, unconditioned, unchanging, unceasing, pristine Ground / Basis / Source of everything that is appearing to our senses, and to our mind – including all of our concepts. So concepts cannot describe it.

But, still, since we have no choice but to use what we have,

we use imperfect concepts / images / arts / theories to point to this inconceivable permanent true nature of Reality.

Ex. We use the concept of ‘God’.

What is omnipresent, permanent …?

Exactly the two principles that we have just mentioned: Love and Death.

God is a pointer to the very fact that everything is interdependent, impermanent, and empty of inherent existence..

And that those two principles / truths are inseparable / interdependent / non-dual / in harmony; one truth / principle implies the other.

.

So: The Ground / Basis / Source / GOD of everything is the inseparability / Union of the Two Truths of interdependence and emptiness.

That is true for everything, everywhere, all the time; it never changes.

It is the core nature of our reality, the source of everything that exists, that is fabricated and impermanent.

That is the third truth / principle about reality as it is – about everything, no exception at all.”

.
(= Union of the two truths: Union of the absolute and relative [U2T],or Union of the Ground and its

.
From Wikipedia: #Maya in #Advaita Vedanta:
.
In the Advaita Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy, 𝗺ā𝘆ā, "𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲", is "the powerful force that creates the cosmic illusion that the phenomenal world is real." In this nondualist school, māyā at the individual level appears as the lack of knowledge (avidyā) of the real Self, Atman-Brahman, mistakingly identifying with the body-mind complex and its entanglements. …
.
In Advaita Vedanta philosophy, there are 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀:
[1] Vyavaharika (empirical reality) and
[2] Paramarthika (absolute, spiritual reality).
.
Māyā is the empirical reality that entangles consciousness.
Māyā has the power to create a bondage to the empirical world, preventing the unveiling of the true, unitary Self – the Cosmic Spirit also known as Brahman.
.
The theory of māyā was developed by the ninth-century Advaita Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara.
However, competing theistic Dvaita scholars contested Shankara's theory, and stated that
𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌ā𝐲ā.
.
A later Advaita scholar Prakasatman addressed this, by explaining:
[𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 / 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 / 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 / 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 / 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀:]
  "𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦,
  𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤.

  𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘢, 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥."
.
Māyā is a fact in that it is the appearance of phenomena.
𝙎𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙝𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝,
𝙈ā𝙮ā 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚;
however, Māyā is not the metaphysical and spiritual truth.
.
The spiritual truth is the truth forever, while what is empirical truth is only true for now.
.
Since Māyā is the perceived material world, it is true in perception context,
but is "untrue" in spiritual context of Brahman.
Māyā is not false, it only clouds the inner Self and principles that are real.
.

From Wikipedia: Ardhanarishvara symbolizes that the male and female principles are inseparable.
The composite form conveys the unity of opposites (coniunctio oppositorum) in the universe.
The male half of Ardhanarishvara stands for Purusha and female half is Prakriti.
Purusha is the male principle and passive force of the universe,
while Prakriti is the female active force;
both are "constantly drawn to embrace
and fuse with each other, though... separated by the intervening axis".
The union of Purusha (Shiva) and Prikriti (Shiva's energy, Shakti) generates the universe,
an idea also manifested in the union of the Linga of Shiva and Yoni of Devi creating the cosmos.
The Mahabharata lauds this form as the source of creation.
Ardhanarishvara also suggests the element of Kama or Lust, which leads to creation.
Ardhanarishvara signifies "totality that lies beyond duality",
"bi-unity of male and female in God" and
"the bisexuality and therefore the non-duality" of the Supreme Being.

Movement, Stillness and Awareness

Bhagavad Gita @GitaBot
“The wise see that there is action in the midst of inaction and inaction in the midst of action. Their consciousness is unified, and every act is done with complete awareness. #Gita”

The wises 𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively;
act conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively <==> but with more and more wisdom / emptiness;
act without apprehending / reifying / differentiating / opposing anything in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively;
act without any grasping / attachment;
act without falling into any extreme or middle about anything (about any duality);
act while being more and more 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙚 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 & 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙙 (physical, conceptual, mental; subject, relation / action, object);
act while being more and more 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙉𝙤𝙣-𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 / 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙨 in any duality / triad / etc. involved;
act while being more and more 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙬𝙤 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 – interdependence and emptiness of inherent existence (the two truths) –;
.
Ex. 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙤𝙣-𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 / 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨:
Movement and stillness are relative to each other, inseparable, interdependent <==> thus both empty of inherent existence, never absolute.
Movement and stillness are merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind.
𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.
Movement and stillness are not different / separate / multiple / dual, not identical / united / one / non-dual,
not both together, not neither.
Meaning their true nature & dynamic is indescribable / inconceivable.
This applies to any physical, conceptual or mental movement.
.
𝗜𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 – 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 –,
no more than to indulge in uncontrolled conditioned movement,
𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙚 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 & 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙨 like movement and stillness.
.
This wisdom is the liberating factor,
not the acceptation / rejection / change / improvement / purification of anything,
not choosing between apparent opposites, preferring one to the other(s).
.
𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 / 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙙𝙨 / 𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙙𝙨 / 𝙚𝙩𝙘.,
even with the three spheres – subject, action, object –,
even with the two truths themselves,
even with the Ground / Self / Awareness and its manifestations / Maya:
The Ground / Reality / Self / Awareness and Maya / illusory manifestations are non-dual / inseparable / interdependent <==> thus both empty of inherent existence <==> both merely labeled / imputed / imagined by the mind; both mere tools / pointers to the moon, not the moon itself
𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 / 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧(𝙨).
The goal is not to accept one and reject the other,
but to realise their true nature & dynamic as it is here & now,
this true inter-relation / Non-duality (not many, not one, not both together, not neither)
.
= Inseparability / Interdependence / Non-duality / Union of Brahman / Shiva <==> and Shakti / the divine mother.

To understand the mystery of this 𝗢𝗻𝗲-𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 [Non-duality of all dharmas]
is to be released from all entanglements [liberation / awakening].
.
When all things are seen 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 [non-dualistically]
the timeless 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 is reached.
.
𝗡𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 [in absolute terms]

.
Consider 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀
and 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 in 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 [T1 – interdependence of the apparent opposites];
both movement and stillness disappear [𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙤𝙢].
[T2 - emptiness of the opposites]
.
When such 𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 cease to exist [are transcended through wisdom]
𝗢𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 [𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆] itself cannot exist [is also transcended through wisdom].

To this ultimate finality no law or description applies [𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲].

Weak intellectuals believe the Self is One without other

Gilles Therrien @gileht 2023-03-22

“I would say that they are not dualistic, not non-dualistic, not  both together, not neither.
They teach: not many, not one, not both together, not neither ... but in a very gradual way.

.

So some parts look dualistic / manyness, some non-dualistic / oneness ...

.

That  is because of our karma.

.

Don't get stuck at any level.

Reality as it is is beyond all of those extremes positions.
