How liberation is to be gained ~ Mipham Rinpoche

"If one trains for a long time in the Union of the Two Truths, the stage of acceptance (on the path of joining), which is attuned to primordial wisdom, will arise. By thus acquiring a certain conviction in that which surpasses intellectual knowledge, and by training in it, one will eventually actualize it. This is precisely how the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas have said that liberation is to be gained."

Relaxing Into Original Nature

Operating alongside the scramble of confused thought mind, is our original primordial condition. Everyone, no matter who or we ‘think’ we are, no matter what persona we have created for ourself, has this original nature. Almost all traditional paths however talk of this nature being buried or obscured beneath veils of ignorance, delusion or karma. However, original nature cannot be hidden, it is always here. Nothing obscures it, for it was never created in the first place. It is that at present you do not yet recognise it.

.

Since you are always this pristine nature, there is nothing to stop you recognising it. Every sight you see, every sound you hear is your real nature, it is only a millisecond later, after the first perception, that discriminating mind begins to label and judge.

.

Everything that you can know is this nature
It manifests as the wisdom of uncreated rigpa awareness.

.

There arises a subtle change in perceptive, from that which seeks and so inhibits this original nature, to releasing and going back into the ‘knowing’ of this nature.

.

Recognition comes about by relaxing into pure awareness itself, without a ‘me’ who is looking, the whole notion of looking at anything is let go of. With no thoughts, expectations, or analysis, nothing at all. It is really so very simple. Any idea you may have of what it is, let it go.

.

Then the intrinsic peaceful clarity of our natural state will arise.
Rest there without consciously noticing that you are resting there.
It is pure, open and empty, clear awareness.

The mirror doesn't prefer red over blue, or choose good over bad, it doesn't discriminate, and it doesn't block, reject, or alter them in any way. It is just open receptivity, without adding any commentary.

.

The reflections on the mirror don’t stick to the mirror, and the mirror doesn't have any lag time – when something is put in front of it and then taken away, the image doesn't stay there for a minute and then slowly leaves. The mirror just immediately and spontaneously responds effortlessly, reflecting the next image without hesitation. It doesn't try to manipulate the situation, thinking, “I want to stay a little while longer with that piece of pie"

.

When we look at a clear mirror directly, all we see are the reflections on its surface, which appear quite real. If there is a spot of dust on its surface, then we can’t see a bit of the surface where the reflection lies, but a clear mirror can’t itself be seen. If our eyes try to behold it, all they see is the image on its surface, just a reflection, an illusory appearance.

While resting free of anything to imagine, like space, do not be distracted for even one instant. The one who trains like that can truly be called a ‘space yogi’. A yogi is an individual who connects with that which is naturally so. Space means that which always is (i.e. the Ground / Suchness / U2T).

Simply allow the space to not wander. Remain undistracted. There is no impetus for any thoughts to reoccur. A thought is a mental way of formulating something — in other words, our attention formulates a thought. The thought doesn’t come from anywhere else. There arises a subtle change in perspective, from that which seeks and so inhibits this original nature, to releasing and going back into the ‘knowing’ of this nature.

The important point is that it is not something different / separate from our ordinary dualistic conceptual mind. It is not something that existed prior to our ordinary mind, or something that is the result of a process of purification of our ordinary mind. It is the true nature of our ordinary mind as it is here & now, and also the true nature of the Buddha's enlightened-mind. It is like an inconceivable Union of the Two Truths [U2T]: Union of conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional appearances [T1] <==> and emptiness of inherent existence [T2]. One aspect implies the other (<==>) [U2T].

.

Also: It is felt as a pure naked/unconditioned non-dual empty-awareness, as a merging of subject / mind & object / phenomena, as being interconnected with the whole universe, as a spontaneous incommensurable love & compassion for the whole universe.
