From Wikipedia: Taoism, or Daoism, is a philosophical tradition of Chinese origin which emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao. The Tao is a fundamental idea in most Chinese philosophical schools; in Taoism, however, it denotes the principle that is the source, pattern and substance of everything that exists. … it is a teaching about the various disciplines for achieving "perfection" by becoming ‘One’ with the unplanned rhythms of the universe called the "tao" …  emphasizes “action without action” (wu wei), "naturalness", simplicity, spontaneity and the Three Treasures: "compassion", frugality" and "humility" …
-
In the context of East Asian philosophy and East Asian religions, Tao is the natural order of the universe whose character one's human intuition must discern in order to realize the potential for individual wisdom. This intuitive knowing of "life" cannot be grasped as a concept; it is known through actual living experience of one's everyday being.
Laozi in the Tao Te Ching explains that the Tao is not a "name" for a "thing" but the underlying natural order of the Universe whose ultimate essence is difficult to circumscribe due to it being non-conceptual yet evident in one's being of aliveness. The Tao is "eternally nameless" (Tao Te Ching-32. Laozi) and to be distinguished from the countless "named" things which are considered to be its manifestations, the reality of life before its descriptions of it.
-
The Tao Te Ching (dated to the late 4th century BCE), a compact book containing teachings attributed to Lao Tzu (whether he actually existed is disputed), is widely considered the keystone work of the Taoist tradition, together with the later writings of Zhuangzi
-- Tao (means the true nature & dynamic of Reality / suchness): has special meaning within the context of Taoism, where it implies the essential, unnameable process of the universe;
-- Te (means the way to act in accord with the Tao): "virtue", "personal character", "inner strength" (virtuosity), or "integrity";
-- Ching: as it is used here means "canon", "great book", or "classic";
-- Tao Te Ching (is then the Book describing how to act, in all domains, while being more and more in accord / harmony with the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here & now / Suchness / Ground / Tao; it comes down to acting with more spontaneity, virtues, integrity, morality, efficiency, and freedom ...);
-- The Tao Te Ching is a short text of around 5,000 Chinese characters in 81 brief chapters or sections. It has two parts, the Tao Ching (chapters 1–37) and the Te Ching (chapters 38–81). The current text might have been compiled c 250 BCE, drawn from a wide range of texts dating back a century or two.

Rรฉsumรฉ -- Application of the Middle Way to Management: acting more and more in accord with Reality, thus being more and more efficient

  • [SECTION I - Tao Ching :] The ‘Tao’ is the indescribable / inconceivable Ground / Source / Suchness / Reality as it is here & now / Genuine-emptiness / Buddha-nature ... as pointed by concepts like the Union of the Two Truths [U2T] free from all extremes & middle, free from all conceptual proliferations, free from all conditioning / karma.

    • [#Tao]

    • Tao / Ground: the indescribable / inconceivable self-arisen unchanging eternal timeless spaceless limitless non-dual pristine Tao / Source / Ground / Genuine-emptiness / Buddha-nature / Suchness / true nature of Reality as it is here & now as pointed by concepts like: Union of the Two Truths / U2T, Union of the three spheres / U3S, Non-duality / Union of opposites / Uopp; the Middle Way free from all extremes & middle, free from all conceptual proliferations, free from all conditioning / karma: nothing to accept / affirm / seek / do / add in absolute terms, nothing to reject / negate / abandon / not-do / subtract in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively if it helps someone to get closer to the inconceivable liberating Truth. It is the Ground with its three inseparable qualities: essence / purity / emptiness of inherent existence, nature / spontaneous presence / conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearance, and dynamism / compassionate energy.

    • Only the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / Union of the Two Truths [U2T] ... is self-arisen, unfabricated, unconditioned, unchanging, eternal, timeless, spaceless, limitless, pristine.
      [Displays:] Everything else is inseparable spontaneous unceasing displays / manifestations / appearances of the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / Union of the Two Truths [U2T].
      [U2T:] Everything else is dependently co-arisen, co-fabricated, co-conditioned, ever-changing, co-evolving, impermanent, co-ceasing (T1) <==> thus empty of inherent existence (T2), like illusions / reflections / mirages.
      [Ground & displays:] The Ground and its displays are inseparable …: Union of the Ground <==> and its displays / manifestations / appearances.
      [Opp displays:] The displays / manifestation / appearances of the Ground always come in groups of apparent opposites: dualities, triad, quads, etc. But, they are only apparently in opposition; in Reality, they are more like inseparable, interdependent, in harmony, in Union.

  • [#Uopp]

  • (i.e. The displays / manifestation / appearances of the Ground always come in groups of apparent opposites: dualities, triad, quads, etc. But, they are only apparently in opposition; in Reality, they are more like inseparable, interdependent, in harmony, in Union. See Non-duality / Union of opposites.)

  • One self-arisen unfabricated unconditioned unchanging timeless spaceless limitless characteristic of the Tao / Ground / Source / Suchness / Reality is the Inconceivable Non-duality / inconceivable Union of opposites [Uopp] in any duality / triad / quad / etc. -- examples: Union good & bad, Union beauty & ugliness, Union big & small, Union slow & fast, Union soft & hard, Union long & short, Union heavy & light, Union right & wrong, Union inferior & superior, Union light & darkness, Union self & other(s), Union male & female, Union positive & negative, Union inside & outside & between, Union before / past & during / present & after / future, Union subject & action & object, Union body & speech & mind, Union individual & collective & cosmic, Union existence & non-existence, Union relative & absolute, Union of the two truths, Union ordinary & divine, Union diversity & oneness, Union nothing & everything, Union stillness & movement, Union duality & non-duality, Union ground & manifestations, Union causality & matter-energy & space & time, etc.:
    U2T-opp: Apparent opposites in any duality / triad / quad / etc. are always like a Union of being conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearances (1st truth / nature of the Ground / spontaneous presence / T1), merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised / categorised / classified by the mind in dependence of its past conditioning / karma (physical, conceptual, mental; individual, collective, cosmic) (U3S / co-evolution of subject & action & object = karmic cycle) <==> and being empty of inherent existence (2nd truth / essence of the Ground / primordial purity / T2), like illusions / reflections / mirages / dreams / rainbows / transparent. Appearing but empty, empty of inherent existence <==> but still conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearances. One truth implies the other (<==>) (dynamism of the Ground / compassionate energy / inseparability of the two aspects / truths / U2T). So they are not really originating / coming from the Ground, not really lasting / staying / changing,  not really ceasing / going / returning to the Ground. They do not really have a before / past, during / present, and after / future. So they have no real permanence / continuity / eternity, no real impermanence / discontinuity / annihilation, no real characteristics / properties / qualities, no real names, no real relations / inter-actions / inter-dependence, no real emptiness, no real source / ground; yet there is this wonderful magical show of illusory appearances, this cosmic dance of luminosity that seems to have a logic in it.
    Uopp-opp: Apparent opposites in any duality / triad / quad / etc. are always inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony, equal / non-dual / one -- in the non-dual sense of those terms. See tetralemma.
    Tetralemma-opp: Apparent opposites in any duality / triad / quad / etc. are always not existent, not non-existent, not both together, not neither; not different / separate / multiple / dual / independent, not identical / united / one / non-dual / interdependent not both together, not neither; not permanent / continuous / eternal, not impermanent / discontinuous / annihilated not both together, not neither; not unequal / impure / imperfect / ordinary, not equal / pure / perfect / divine not both together, not neither; not dependent / caused / produced / functional, not independent / uncaused/spontaneous / unproduced / non-functional, not both together, not neither; not empty, not non-empty, not both together, not neither; not dependently co-arisen / interdependent (1st truth), not empty of inherent existence (2nd truth), not both truths together, not neither truth; not conventional / relative / false, not absolute / universal / true, not both together, not neither; not this, not non-this, not both together, not neither; etc. Meaning their true nature is beyond all extremes & middle, beyond all conceptual proliferations, beyond all conditioning / karma.
    Display-opp: Apparent opposites in any duality / triad / quad / etc. are always inseparable spontaneous unceasing co-displays / co-manifestations / co-appearances of the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / Union of the Two Truths [U2T].

    • Because the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here & now is indescribable / inconceivable, beyond all discrimination / opposition, beyond all extremes & middle, beyond all conceptual proliferations, beyond all conditioning / karma, more and more in accord with the Union of the Two Truths / Non-duality / Union of opposites, then the best attitude & conduct to adopt is to be present here & now, to observe what is with openness & equanimity, to let it be, to act without acting, to adopt the Middle Way in everything.

    • Practice mindfulness, presence, openness, equanimity, non-duality, the Middle Way in everything, being without being, having without having, doing without doing, acting without acting, creating without creating, perceiving without perceiving, thinking without thinking, feeling without feeling, discriminating without discriminations, conceptualising without conceptualising, remembering without remembering, planning without planning, modeling without modeling, talking without talking, teaching without teaching, learning without learning, knowing without knowing, being conscious without being conscious, loving without loving, helping without helping, liberating without liberating. Also, never expect things to last forever, never discriminate in absolute terms, never act in absolute terms, never expect absolute control and results, never think that we can possess things or beings, never think we/things exist inherently with inherently existing characteristics / properties / qualities or faults.

    • Path / Conduct: Union of virtues & wisdom / emptiness (accumulating both merit and wisdom together): ex. perfecting the Four immeasurables and the Six Paramitas: immeasurable loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity; generosity, moral discipline, patience, diligence, concentration / samatha, wisdom / vipashyana / insight; compassionately teaching all sentient beings without any discrimination.

    • One self-arisen unfabricated unconditioned unchanging timeless spaceless limitless characteristic of the Tao / Ground / Source / Suchness / Reality is the Inconceivable Union of Method / Meditation & Wisdom / Insight [U-MW]:
      U2T-MW: Apparent opposites like Method / Meditation and Wisdom / Insight are always like a Union of being conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearances (1st truth / nature of the Ground / spontaneous presence / T1), merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised / categorised / classified by the mind in dependence of its past conditioning / karma (physical, conceptual, mental; individual, collective, cosmic) (U3S / co-evolution of subject & action & object = karmic cycle) <==> and being empty of inherent existence (2nd truth / essence of the Ground / primordial purity / T2), like illusions / reflections / mirages / dreams / rainbows / transparent.
      Uopp-MW: Apparent opposites like Method / Meditation and Wisdom / Insight are always inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony, equal / non-dual / one -- in the non-dual sense of those terms. See tetralemma..
      Tetralemma-MW: Apparent opposites like Method / Meditation and Wisdom / Insight are always not existent, not non-existent, not both together, not neither; not different / separate / multiple / dual / independent, not identical / united / one / non-dual / interdependent not both together, not neither; not permanent / continuous / eternal, not impermanent / discontinuous / annihilated not both together, not neither; not unequal / impure / imperfect / ordinary, not equal / pure / perfect / divine not both together, not neither; not dependent / caused / produced / functional, not independent / uncaused/spontaneous / unproduced / non-functional, not both together, not neither; not empty, not non-empty, not both together, not neither; not dependently co-arisen / interdependent (1st truth), not empty of inherent existence (2nd truth), not both truths together, not neither truth; not conventional / relative / false, not absolute / universal / true, not both together, not neither; not this, not non-this, not both together, not neither; etc. Meaning their true nature is beyond all extremes & middle, beyond all conceptual proliferations, beyond all conditioning / karma.
      Display-MW: Apparent opposites like Method / Meditation and Wisdom / Insight are always inseparable spontaneous unceasing co-displays / co-manifestations / co-appearances of the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / Union of the Two Truths [U2T].

    • The Path / Practice / Conduct must be more and more in accord with the View / Ground / Tao and the Fruit / Enlightenment: The Path / Practice / Conduct consists of using various gradual adapted skillful means / antidotes / virtuous truths methods & views / tools [T1] <==> combined with more and more wisdom / emptiness [T2]. It consists of using various tools without being fooled by them, without any grasping, without getting attached to them, without becoming slaves to them, without thinking they are inherently existing with inherently existing characteristics / properties / qualities / effects.

    • One self-arisen unfabricated unconditioned unchanging timeless spaceless limitless characteristic of the Tao / Ground / Source / Suchness / Reality is the Inconceivable Union of View / Ground, Path / Meditation / Conduct, and Fruition / Enlightenment [U-VPF]:
      U2T-VPF: Apparent opposites like View / Ground, Path / Meditation / Conduct, and Fruition / Enlightenment are always like a Union of being conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearances (1st truth / nature of the Ground / spontaneous presence / T1), merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised / categorised / classified by the mind in dependence of its past conditioning / karma (physical, conceptual, mental; individual, collective, cosmic) (U3S / co-evolution of subject & action & object = karmic cycle) <==> and being empty of inherent existence (2nd truth / essence of the Ground / primordial purity / T2), like illusions / reflections / mirages / dreams / rainbows / transparent. Uopp-VPF: Apparent opposites like View / Ground, Path / Meditation / Conduct, and Fruition / Enlightenment are always inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony, equal / non-dual / one -- in the non-dual sense of those terms. Display-VPF: Apparent opposites like View / Ground, Path / Meditation / Conduct, and Fruition / Enlightenment are always inseparable spontaneous unceasing co-displays / co-manifestations / co-appearances of the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / Union of the Two Truths [U2T].

    • This is called acting / doing without acting / doing, with equanimity & openness & presence here & now, without being slave to any conditioning / karma, without leaving a trace / creating more conditioning or karma, without any craving / attachment about the past present or future, without accepting or rejecting anything in absolute terms, without any artificial di-vision between the subject / actor & relation / action & object / result, without any artificial di-vision between apparent opposites, without any artificial di-vision between the two truths, without any artificial di-vision between the Ground and its displays / manifestations / appearances. Acting while being fully aware of the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here & now / U2T, the true nature & dynamic of the three spheres / U3S, the true nature & dynamic of opposites / Uopp, that all appearances are spontaneous unceasing pure displays / manifestations of the Ground / UGD. This is valid for any action of the body, speech & mind. It is acting more and more in accord with the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here & now, the Ground / Suchness / Genuine-emptiness / Buddha-nature.

    • This is acting more and more in accord with the Middle Way free from all extremes & middle, free from all conceptual proliferations, free from all conditioning / karma: nothing to accept / affirm / seek / do / add in absolute terms, nothing to reject / negate / abandon / not-do / subtract in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively if it helps someone to get closer to the inconceivable liberating Truth. Free from extremes like: existence / realism, non-existence / nihilism, both existence & non-existence together / dualism, neither existence not non-existence / monism; permanence / continuity / eternalism, impermanence / discontinuity / annihilationism; objects-only / objectivism, subject-only / subjectivism, relation-only / process-only / relationism / processism, etc.; dependent-origination-only / first-truth-only, emptiness-only / second-truth-only, the two truths together, neither of the two truths; etc. With any duality we have four possible extreme positions: accept one side & reject the other, vice versa, accept both sides, reject both sides. The Middle Way is free from all of those positions / views.

  • So, in a sense, the ‘Tao’ is related to the second Truth / the absolute truth / Genuine-emptiness,
    while ‘Te’ is related to the first truth, the conventional / relative truths methods & goals, the adapted skillful means used on the path.
    So the Tao Te Ching is about acting more and more in accord with the Tao / Ground / Reality / Union of the Two Truths.

  • There is just one Reality.
    Reality is Reality in whatever religion or science one wants to express it.

The tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao

The name that can be named is not the eternal Name.

The unnamable is the eternally real. (i.e. The Tao / Ground is what is self-arisen unfabricated unproduced unconditioned unchanging eternal timeless spaceless limitless in Reality; the basis of Reality; it is indescribable, inconceivable.)
Naming is the origin of all particular things [T1]. (i.e. Everything that has a name is necessarily merely conventional / relative / dependently co-arisen / conditioned / impermanent. All appearances are merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised by the mind in dependence of its conditioning / karma (individual, collective, cosmic).)

Actions based on ignorance and grasping at the Ground’s displays / manifestations / appearances, at conventional / relative truths methods & goals [T1], only perpetuate the self-conditioning cycle / karmic cycle (samsara) and suffering for self & others.)

.

Yet mystery and manifestations (i.e. Conventionally there are two truths: conventional / relative & absolute truth, or conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional appearances / T1 & emptiness of inherent existence / T2.)

arise from the same source. (i.e. But, ultimately, these two truths are not really in opposition, but are more like inseparable / interdependent / co-dependent. One implies the other (<==>). This is called the Union of the Two Truths / U2T.)

.

(i.e. Those two aspects / truths of Reality as it is here & now, of the Ground -- [T1] the variety / manifestations / appearances / the relative & [T2] the oneness / mystery / emptiness / the absolute -- are not in real opposition, but are more like inseparable, interdependent, in harmony, in Union. This is called the Union of the Two Truths about all dharmas, about all displays / manifestations / appearances of the Ground. These two aspects are called the essence [T2] and nature [T1] of the Ground. Their inseparability / interdependence / harmony / Union is the dynamism / compassionate energy [U2T] of the Ground; it is what permits everything to spontaneously arise even though the Ground is empty of inherent existence. Empty-appearances empty-arising from the empty-Ground.)

.

This source is called darkness. (i.e. The Tao / Ground / Basis / Source is this inconceivable Union of the Two Truths. That is what is self-arisen unfabricated unconditioned unchanging eternal timeless spaceless limitless in Reality. Everything arises from this and ultimately returns to this Ground / U2T.)
.

(i.e. This Ground / Source is called ‘darkness’ in the sense of Genuine-emptiness which is the Union of the Two Truths free from all extremes & middle, free from all conceptual proliferations, free from all conditioning / karma.)

[#U2T - See comment about U2T in the rรฉsumรฉ above]

.

Darkness within darkness. (i.e. The true nature of those two truths and their inter-relation is expressed by the concept of the Union of the Two Truths about the two truths themselves / U2T-2T.)

The gateway to all understanding.

.

(i.e. But this Ground / Source called ‘darkness’ in the sense of Genuine-emptiness which is the Union of the Two Truths is also just a concept pointing to the inconceivable true nature of Reality as it is here & now. So we should not grasp at this concept either. So ‘darkness within darkness’ (mystery within mystery) could be pointing to the fact that emptiness is also empty, or to the Union of the Two Truths about the two truths themselves, or to the fact that the Ground is empty, and its displays / manifestations / appearances are also empty of inherent existence. All meaning the same thing. Empty cause <==> empty causality <==> empty effect. Empty but still relatively functional.)

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation - http://www.mobilewords.pro/Tao/FENG_ENG.htm#top :]

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.

The name that can be named is not the eternal name.

The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth.

The named is the mother of the ten thousand things.

Ever desireless, one can see the mystery.

Ever desiring, one sees the manifestations.

These two spring from the same source but differ in name; this appears as darkness.

Darkness within darkness.

The gate to all mystery.

[Red Pine’s translation - http://www.mobilewords.pro/Tao/redpine.htm:]

The way that becomes a way is not the Immortal Way the name that becomes a name is not the Immortal Name

the maiden of Heaven and Earth has no name the mother of all things has a name

thus in innocence we see the beginning in passion we see the end

two different names for one and the same

the one we call dark the dark beyond dark the door to all beginnings

[Chinese Text Project’s translation] - https://ctext.org/dao-de-jing

(Embodying the Dao)

The Dao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Dao.

The name that can be named is not the enduring and unchanging name.

(Conceived of as) having no name, it is the Originator of heaven and earth;

(conceived of as) having a name, it is the Mother of all things.

Always without desire we must be found,

If its deep mystery we would sound;

But if desire always within us be,

Its outer fringe is all that we shall see.

Under these two aspects, it is really the same; but as development takes place, it receives the different names.

Together we call them the Mystery.

Where the Mystery is the deepest is the gate of all that is subtle and wonderful.

2 - [PROPER CONDUCT / PATH -- ACTING WITHOUT ACTING: The ‘Tao’ is also pointed by the concept of Non-duality / Union of conceptual opposites. Meaning that there is no independent / universal / absolute basis for any discrimination & activity, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively. Opposition / dualities are mere conditioned appearances; merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised / categorised / classified by the mind in dependence of its past / conditioning / karma. The ‘Te’ is acting as much as possible more and more in accord with the Tao / true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here & now / the Union of the Two Truths [U2T] free from all extremes & middle / the Union of the three spheres [U3S] / the Union of opposites [Uopp] / the Middle Way. This is called ‘acting without acting’ / ‘being without being’ / ‘having without having’ / etc.]

When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly.

When people see some things as good, other things become bad. (i.e. All appearances -- physical, conceptual, mental -- come from the Ground in groups of conceptual opposites: dualities / triads / quads / etc.)

.

Being and non-being create each other.

Difficult and easy support each other.

Long and short define each other.

High and low depend on each other.

Before and after follow each other. (i.e. Apparent opposites are not really in opposition, but are more like: inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony, equal / non-dual / one -- in the non-dual sense of those terms; ex. not different / separate / multiple / dual / independent, not identical / united / one / non-dual / interdependent, not both together, not neither; etc.)

.

[#Uopp - See comment about Uopp in the rรฉsumรฉ above]

.

Therefore the Master (i.e. The teacher / leader / sage who acts without acting -- by being fully present here & now, and being more and more in accord with the empty non-dual Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now / U2T / U3S / Uopp / Middle Way free from all extremes & middle.)

acts without doing anything

and teaches without saying anything. (i.e. So there is no inherent / independent / universal / absolute basis for any separation / opposition / discrimination; for accepting / affirming / seeking / doing this, while rejecting / negating / abandoning / not-doing that in absolute terms; for separating things like subject, relation / action, and object; or for separating cause, causality and effect.)

.

Things arise and she lets them come;

things disappear and she lets them go.

She has but doesn't possess,

acts but doesn't expect.

When her work is done, she forgets it.

That is why it lasts forever. (i.e. So the best attitude is observing with equanimity, acting without acting, letting illusory appearances come and go from the Ground by themselves, without any grasping / attachment, abiding in ‘oneness’. That is acting in accord / harmony with the Tao / Ground / Reality / U2T / Middle Way. All of these actions are inseparable virtues and wisdom.)

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation:]

Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness.

All can know good as good only because there is evil.

Therefore having and not having arise together.

Difficult and easy complement each other.

Long and short contrast each other:

High and low rest upon each other;

Voice and sound harmonize each other;

Front and back follow one another.

Therefore the sage goes about doing nothing, teaching no-talking.

The ten thousand things rise and fall without cease,

Creating, yet not possessing.

Working, yet not taking credit.

Work is done, then forgotten.

Therefore it lasts forever.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

All the world knows beauty but if that becomes beautiful this becomes ugly

all the word knows good but if that becomes good this becomes bad

the coexistence of have and have not the coproduction of hard and easy the correlation of long and short

the codependence of high and low the correspondence of note and noise the coordination of first and last is endless

thus the sage performs effortless deeds and teaches wordless lessons

he doesn't start all things he begins he doesn't presume on what he does he doesn't claim what he achieves

and because he makes no claim he suffers no loss

(The nourishment of the person)

All in the world know the beauty of the beautiful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what ugliness is;

they all know the skill of the skilful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what the want of skill is.

So it is that existence and non-existence give birth the one to (the idea of) the other;

that difficulty and ease produce the one (the idea of) the other;

that length and shortness fashion out the one the figure of the other;

that (the ideas of) height and lowness arise from the contrast of the one with the other;

that the musical notes and tones become harmonious through the relation of one with another;

and that being before and behind give the idea of one following another.

Therefore the sage manages affairs without doing anything, and conveys his instructions without the use of speech.

All things spring up, and there is not one which declines to show itself;

they grow, and there is no claim made for their ownership;

they go through their processes, and there is no expectation (of a reward for the results).

The work is accomplished, and there is no resting in it (as an achievement).

The work is done, but how no one can see;

'Tis this that makes the power not cease to be.

3 - [NO ABSOLUTE TO GRASP: Since everything is empty of inherent existence because dependently co-arisen, then there is no independent / universal / absolute / inherently existing teachers / beings, views / teachings / truths, paths / methods / activities / ritual / rules, fruits / goals -- but there are valid useful conventional relative ones. There is nothing to grasp, get attached to, become slave to: no thing, no being / guru, no activity / method / path, no non-activity, no concept / idea / view, no principle. There is nothing to accept / affirm / seek / do / add in absolute terms, nothing to reject / negate / abandon / not-do / subtract in absolute terms, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively if it helps someone to get closer to the inconceivable liberating Truth. Even the Tao / Ground / Reality / Union of the Two Truths, the Union of the three spheres, the Union of opposites, the Middle Way ... are mere adapted skillful means, temporary imperfect antidotes / medicine, fingers pointing at the moon, reflections of the moon, not the moon itself.]

If you overesteem great men, people become powerless. (i.e. Like reifying / grasping at / opposing people. Attributing more values to some.)

If you overvalue possessions (physical, conceptual, mental), people begin to steal. (i.e. Like reifying / grasping at / opposing things -- physical, conceptual, mental --. Attributing more values to some.)
.

(i.e. Example of not acting more and more in accord with the Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now.)
(i.e. Examples of grasping at, attachment to, being slave to ... this or that -- physical, conceptual, mental, individual, collective, cosmic --.)

.

The Master (i.e. The teacher / leader / sage who acts without acting -- by being fully present here & now, and being more and more in accord with the empty non-dual Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now / U2T / U3S / Uopp / Middle Way free from all extremes & middle.)
leads by emptying people's minds and filling their cores,

by weakening their ambition and toughening their resolve.

He helps people lose everything they know, everything they desire,

and creates confusion in those who think that they know. (i.e. So it is not about getting better knowledge, relations, possessions, but about relaxing our grasp onto what we already have, relaxing our discrimination between them, becoming more free from them. It is not about rejecting / abandoning / not-doing everything either. It is about the Middle Way free from all extremes & middle, more in accord with Reality as it is here & now. It is about being able to use them as tools without being fooled by them, without becoming slaves to them.)
.

(i.e. The teacher is not teaching some absolute truths or methods or goals; or to be slaves to some guru / being.
He is teaching without teaching. Teaching how to become conscious of, and transcend through direct wisdom, our conditioning / karma. And students / disciples must learn / practice without learning / practicing, without reifying anything, grasping at anything, becoming slaves to anything or being.)

.

Practice not-doing (doing without doing), (i.e. It is about being without being, having without having, doing without doing, perceiving without perceiving, knowing without knowing, etc. -- while being fully aware of the true nature & co-dynamic of the three spheres -- subject, relation / action, object -- of any activity or relation. [U3S])

and everything will fall into place.

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation:]

Not exalting the gifted prevents quarreling.

Not collecting treasures prevents stealing.

Not seeing desirable things prevents confusion of the heart.

The wise therefore rule by emptying hearts and stuffing bellies, by weakening ambitions and strengthening bones.

If men lack knowledge and desire, then clever people will not try to interfere.

If nothing is done, then all will be well.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

Bestowing no honours keeps people from fighting

prizing no treasures keeps people from stealing

displaying no attractions keeps people from making trouble

thus the rule of the sage empties the mind but fills the stomach weakens the will but strengthens the bones

by keeping the people from knowing or wanting and those who know from daring to act

he thus governs them all

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Keeping the people at rest)

Not to value and employ men of superior ability is the way to keep the people from rivalry among themselves;

not to prize articles which are difficult to procure is the way to keep them from becoming thieves;

not to show them what is likely to excite their desires is the way to keep their minds from disorder.

Therefore the sage, in the exercise of his government, empties their minds, fills their bellies, weakens their wills, and strengthens their bones.

He constantly (tries to) keep them without knowledge and without desire, and where there are those who have knowledge, to keep them from presuming to act (on it).

When there is this abstinence from action, good order is universal.

4 - [ONE TIMELESS EMPTY SOURCE FOR THE APPARENT VARIETY: The Tao / Ground / Source / Reality / U2T is self-arisen, unconditioned, unchanging, eternal -- timeless, spaceless, limitless. It is characterised by three inseparable qualities: i. essence / purity / the emptiness of inherent existence (2nd truth - T2) of all dharmas, ii. nature / spontaneous presence / conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent displays / manifestations / appearances (1st truth - T1), and iii. dynamism / compassionate energy / inseparability of the first two aspects / Union of the Two Truths (U2T). So, although everything is ONE in being empty of inherent existence, there is still the spontaneous unimpeded co-emergence of the infinite VARIETY of displays / manifestations / appearances of both samsara & nirvana. Appearing but empty, empty but appearing. One aspect / truth implies the other (<==>).]

The Tao is like a well: used but never used up.

It is like the eternal void [T2]: filled with infinite possibilities [T1]. (i.e. The Tao / Ground / Basis / Source is the inconceivable Union of the Two Truths: Union of a multitude of conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearances / T1 <==> and one unique emptiness of inherent existence / T2. Or the Union of one unique Ground / Basis / Source / U2T <==> and a multitude of displays / manifestations [T1] of the Ground. Union one <==> many; Union nothing <==> everything. Union relative <==> absolute.)

It is hidden but always present. (i.e. The inconceivable Tao / Ground / Basis / Source is timeless; not existent, not non-existent, not both together, not neither.)

I don't know who gave birth to it. (i.e. The Tao / Ground / Basis / Source is the only thing in Reality that is self-arisen unfabricated unproduced unconditioned unchanging eternal timeless spaceless limitless -- in the non-dual sense of those terms -- and, well, not really a ‘thing’, just the inconceivable primordial nature of everything.)

It is older than God. (i.e. It is like the Source of everything good & bad in both samsara & nirvana -- without being a real source --, the true nature & dynamic of everything. All mere pointers to the moon, not the moon itself. It takes time to get a proper non-conceptual direct realisation of this.)

.

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation:]

The Tao is an empty vessel; it is used, but never filled.

Oh, unfathomable source of ten thousand things!

Blunt the sharpness,

Untangle the knot,

Soften the glare,

Merge with dust.

Oh, hidden deep but ever present!

I do not know from whence it comes.

It is the forefather of the gods.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

The Tao is so empty those who use it never become full again

and so deep as if it were the ancestor of us all

dulling our edges untying our tangles softening our light merging our dust

and so clear as if it were present

I wonder whose child it is it seems it was here before the Ti

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(The fountainless)

The Dao is (like) the emptiness of a vessel; and in our employment of it we must be on our guard against all fullness. How deep and unfathomable it is, as if it were the Honoured Ancestor of all things! We should blunt our sharp points, and unravel the complications of things; we should attemper our brightness, and bring ourselves into agreement with the obscurity of others. How pure and still the Dao is, as if it would ever so continue! I do not know whose son it is. It might appear to have been before God.

5 - [ANOTHER QUALITY OF THE GROUND: EQUANIMITY / OPENNESS: In Reality there is no independent / universal / absolute basis for any discrimination & activity, just conventionally / relatively / inter-subjectively. Opposition / dualities are mere conditioned appearances; merely labelled / imputed / conceptualised / categorised / classified by the mind in dependence of its past / conditioning / karma. So the best attitude & conduct to adopt is to be present here & now, to observe what is with openness & equanimity, to let it be, to act without acting, to adopt the Middle Way in everything: ex. even about the two truths themselves, or about plurality / duality & oneness / non-duality: not accepting one side / truth and rejecting the other, not vice versa, not accepting both sides / truths together, not rejecting both.]

The Tao doesn't take sides; it gives birth to both good and evil.

.

The Master (i.e. The teacher / leader / sage who acts without acting -- by being fully present here & now, and being more and more in accord with the empty non-dual Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now / U2T / U3S / Uopp / Middle Way free from all extremes & middle.)
doesn't take sides; she welcomes both saints and sinners. (i.e. The Master is in accord with the Tao, with the Non-duality / Union of opposites or Union of the Two Truths about opposites: he also doesn't take sides in absolute terms; he is equanimous, open to everybody and everything.)

.

The Tao is like a bellows: it is empty [T2] yet infinitely capable [T1].
The more you use it, the more it produces;

the more you talk of it, the less you understand.
Hold on to the center. (i.e. The Tao / Ground / Basis / Source is indescribable, inconceivable for our flawed conditioned conceptual dualistic mind based on two erroneous basic assumptions: inherent existence and opposition / relation of entities. Since everything is non-dual, the best attitude is to adopt the Middle Way free from all extremes & middle in everything.)

Heaven and Earth are impartial;

The wise are impartial;

They see the people as straw dogs.

The space between heaven and Earth is like a bellows.

The shape changes but not the form;

The more it moves, the more it yields.

More words count less.

Hold fast to the center.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

Heaven and Earth are heartless treating creatures like straw dogs

heartless is the sage treating people like straw dogs

between Heaven and Earth how like a bellows empty but inexhaustible each movement produces more

taking only wastes it better to keep it inside

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(The use of emptiness)

Heaven and earth do not act from (the impulse of) any wish to be benevolent; they deal with all things as the dogs of grass are dealt with.

The sages do not act from (any wish to be) benevolent; they deal with the people as the dogs of grass are dealt with.

May not the space between heaven and earth be compared to a bellows?

'Tis emptied, yet it loses not its power;

'Tis moved again, and sends forth air the more.

Much speech to swift exhaustion lead we see;

Your inner being guard, and keep it free.

6 - [ETERNALLY PRESENT UNCONTRIVED / LIMITLESS SOURCE OF ANYTHING & EVERYTHING: The self-arisen unchanging unstoppable eternal pristine Tao / Ground / U2T is like the Source / Basis / Dynamism / Compassionate energy at the origin of everything good, neutral or bad, in both samsara & nirvana. There is no other primary cause or explanation than this; it explains everything. But do not think of it as independent of, separate from, prior to, its spontaneous unceasing displays / manifestations / appearances. It is not really a first cause, or basis, or universal law. This primordial Ground ‘is without being’, ‘causes / creates without causing / creating’, ‘manifestes without manifesting’, is ‘one without being one’; thus in accord with the inconceivable Union of the Two Truths, the Union of opposites.]

The Tao is called the Great Mother: Empty [T2] yet inexhaustible [T1],
it gives birth to infinite worlds. (i.e. The compassionate energy of the Tao / Ground / Source / Basis / U2T can give birth to anything in samsara and nirvana.)
It is always present within you. (i.e. This capacity is always present.)

You can use it any way you want. (i.e. So, in a sense, we can use our naked primordial awareness / the Ground / U2T to create / imagine anything we want. There are no other laws to restrict this. Just the Union of the Two Truths about everything, the only Reality. Everything else comes from that. So the Union of the Two Truths looks like a universal first cause, of principle, or restriction; but again Reality is even more subtle than all this. Nothing we can imagine / conceptualise can really be the true nature & dynamic of Reality as it is here  & now. It is inconceivable.)

Long and unbroken does its power remain,

Used gently, and without the touch of pain.

Heaven and Earth last forever.

Why do heaven and Earth last forever?

They are unborn,

So ever living.

The sage stays behind, thus he is ahead.

He is detached, thus at one with all.

Through selfless action, he attains fulfillment.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

Heaven is eternal and Earth is immortal

the reason they're eternal and immortal is because they don't live for themselves hence they can live forever

thus the sage pulls himself back but ends up in front

he lets himself go but ends up safe

selflessness must be the reason whatever he seeks he finds

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Sheathing the light)

Heaven is long-enduring and earth continues long. The reason why heaven and earth are able to endure and continue thus long is because they do not live of, or for, themselves. This is how they are able to continue and endure. Therefore the sage puts his own person last, and yet it is found in the foremost place; he treats his person as if it were foreign to him, and yet that person is preserved. Is it not because he has no personal and private ends, that therefore such ends are realised?

Hence (its way) is near to (that of) the Dao. (Possibilities through the Dao)

When the intelligent and animal souls are held together in one embrace, they can be kept from separating. When one gives undivided attention to the (vital) breath, and brings it to the utmost degree of pliancy, he can become as a (tender) babe. When he has cleansed away the most mysterious sights (of his imagination), he can become without a flaw. In loving the people and ruling the state, cannot he proceed without any (purpose of) action? In the opening and shutting of his gates of heaven, cannot he do so as a female bird? While his intelligence reaches in every direction, cannot he (appear to) be without knowledge? (The Dao) produces (all things) and nourishes them; it produces them and does not claim them as its own; it does all, and yet does not boast of it; it presides over all, and yet does not control them. This is what is called 'The mysterious Quality' (of the Dao).

11 - [DYNAMISM OF THE GROUND / COMPASSIONATE ENERGY: Although everything is conventionally dependently co-arisen relatively functional impermanent appearance [T1 - nature of the Ground], it is the emptiness of inherent existence [T2 - essence of the Ground] that permits everything to arise, to change, to evolve, to be transformed, to be liberated. Without it everything would be fixed forever. And the dynamism / energy necessary for this transformation comes from the inseparability / interdependence / harmony / Union of the Two Truths [U2T] itself. From the fact that, even if the Ground and everything are empty, anything can still appear like out of the Ground, evolve and ultimately return to the Ground. But, one should not grasp at this emptiness, or at the Ground, as a real independent / separate / pre-existing basis of all displays / manifestations / appearances of the Ground. The Ground and its displays, or the two truths, are inseparable, interdependent, co-defined, co-relative, co-dependent, co-emergent, co-evolving, co-ceasing / co-transcended, in harmony, equal / non-dual / one -- in the non-dual sense of those terms: ex. not different / separate / multiple / dual / independent, not identical / united / one / non-dual / interdependent, not both together, not neither; etc. The Ground and its displays are both empty of inherent existence <==> because co-existent / co-dependent.]

We join spokes together in a wheel,

but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want.

Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub;

It is the center hole that makes it useful.

Shape clay into a vessel;

It is the space within that makes it useful.

Cut doors and windows for a room;

It is the holes which make it useful.

Therefore benefit comes from what is there;

Usefulness from what is not there.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

Thirty spokes converge on a hub but it's the emptiness that makes a wheel work

pots are fashioned from clay but it's the hollow that make a pot work

windows and doors are carved for a house but it's the spaces that make a house work

windows and doors are carved for a house but it's the spaces that make a house work

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(The use of what has no substantive existence)

The thirty spokes unite in the one nave; but it is on the empty space (for the axle), that the use of the wheel depends.

Clay is fashioned into vessels; but it is on their empty hollowness, that their use depends.

The door and windows are cut out (from the walls) to form an apartment; but it is on the empty space (within), that its use depends.

Therefore, what has a (positive) existence serves for profitable adaptation, and what has not that for (actual) usefulness.

who honours is body as much as the world can be entrusted with the world who loves his body as much as the world can be encharged with the world

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Loathing shame)

Favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared;

honour and great calamity, to be regarded as personal conditions (of the same kind).

What is meant by speaking thus of favour and disgrace?

Disgrace is being in a low position (after the enjoyment of favour).

The getting that (favour) leads to the apprehension (of losing it), and the losing it leads to the fear of (still greater calamity) - this is what is meant by saying that favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared.

And what is meant by saying that honour and great calamity are to be (similarly) regarded as personal conditions?

What makes me liable to great calamity is my having the body (which I call myself); if I had not the body, what great calamity could come to me?

Therefore he who would administer the kingdom, honouring it as he honours his own person, may be employed to govern it, and he who would administer it with the love which he bears to his own person may be entrusted with it.

We listen to it, and we do not hear it, and we name it 'the Inaudible.'

We try to grasp it, and do not get hold of it, and we name it 'the Subtle.'

With these three qualities, it cannot be made the subject of description; and hence we blend them together and obtain The One.

Its upper part is not bright, and its lower part is not obscure.

Ceaseless in its action, it yet cannot be named, and then it again returns and becomes nothing.

This is called the Form of the Formless, and the Semblance of the Invisible; this is called the Fleeting and Indeterminable.

We meet it and do not see its Front; we follow it, and do not see its Back.

All we can do is describe their appearance.

(The exhibition of the qualities of the Dao)

The skilful masters (of the Dao) in old times, with a subtle and exquisite penetration, comprehended its mysteries, and were deep (also) so as to elude men's knowledge.

As they were thus beyond men's knowledge, I will make an effort to describe of what sort they appeared to be.

Shrinking looked they like those who wade through a stream in winter;

irresolute like those who are afraid of all around them;

grave like a guest (in awe of his host);

evanescent like ice that is melting away;

unpretentious like wood that has not been fashioned into anything;

vacant like a valley, and dull like muddy water.

Who can (make) the muddy water (clear)?

Let it be still, and it will gradually become clear.

Who can secure the condition of rest?

Let movement go on, and the condition of rest will gradually arise.

They who preserve this method of the Dao do not wish to be full (of themselves).

It is through their not being full of themselves that they can afford to seem worn and not appear new and complete.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Returning to the root)

The (state of) vacancy should be brought to the utmost degree, and that of stillness guarded with unwearying vigour.

All things alike go through their processes of activity, and (then) we see them return (to their original state).

When things (in the vegetable world) have displayed their luxuriant growth, we see each of them return to its root.

This returning to their root is what we call the state of stillness; and that stillness may be called a reporting that they have fulfilled their appointed end.

The report of that fulfilment is the regular, unchanging rule.

To know that unchanging rule is to be intelligent; not to know it leads to wild movements and evil issues.

The knowledge of that unchanging rule produces a (grand) capacity and forbearance, and that capacity and forbearance lead to a community (of feeling with all things).

From this community of feeling comes a kingliness of character; and he who is king-like goes on to be heaven-like.

In that likeness to heaven he possesses the Dao.

Possessed of the Dao, he endures long; and to the end of his bodily life, is exempt from all danger of decay.

Thus it was that when faith (in the Dao) was deficient (in the rulers) a want of faith in them ensued (in the people).

(Being different from ordinary men)

When we renounce learning we have no troubles.

The (ready) 'yes,' and (flattering) 'yea;'

Small is the difference they display.

But mark their issues, good and ill;

What space the gulf between shall fill?

What all men fear is indeed to be feared; but how wide and without end is the range of questions (asking to be discussed)!

The multitude of men look satisfied and pleased; as if enjoying a full banquet, as if mounted on a tower in spring.

I alone seem listless and still, my desires having as yet given no indication of their presence.

I am like an infant which has not yet smiled.

I look dejected and forlorn, as if I had no home to go to.

The multitude of men all have enough and to spare.

I alone seem to have lost everything.

My mind is that of a stupid man; I am in a state of chaos.

Ordinary men look bright and intelligent, while I alone seem to be benighted.

They look full of discrimination, while I alone am dull and confused.

I seem to be carried about as on the sea, drifting as if I had nowhere to rest.

All men have their spheres of action, while I alone seem dull and incapable, like a rude borderer.

(Thus) I alone am different from other men, but I value the nursing-mother (the Dao).

From Dao come, their only source.

Who can of Dao the nature tell?

Our sight it flies, our touch as well.

Eluding sight, eluding touch,

The forms of things all in it crouch;

Eluding touch, eluding sight,

There are their semblances, all right.

Profound it is, dark and obscure;

Things' essences all there endure.

Those essences the truth enfold

Of what, when seen, shall then be told.

Now it is so; 'twas so of old.

Its name - what passes not away;

So, in their beautiful array,

Things form and never know decay.

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation:]

Yield and overcome;

Bend and be straight;

Empty and be full;

Wear out and be new;

Have little and gain;

Have much and be confused.

Therefore the wise embrace the one

And set an example to all.

Not putting on a display,

They shine forth.

Not justifying themselves,

They are distinguished.

Not boasting,

They receive recognition.

Not bragging,

They never falter.

They do not quarrel,

So no one quarrels with them.

Therefore the ancients say, "Yield and overcome."

Is that an empty saying?

Be really whole,

And all things will come to you.

.

[Red Pine’s translation:]

Partial means whole crooked means straight hollow means full worn-out means new less means content more means confused

thus the sage holds onto the one to use in guiding the world

not watching himself he appears not displaying himself he flourishes not flattering himself he succeeds not parading himself he leads

because he doesn't compete no one can compete against him

the ancients who said partial means whole came close indeed becoming whole depends on this

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(The increase granted to humility)

The partial becomes complete; the crooked, straight; the empty, full; the worn out, new.

He whose (desires) are few gets them; he whose (desires) are many goes astray.

Therefore the sage holds in his embrace the one thing (of humility), and manifests it to all the world.

He is free from self-display, and therefore he shines;

from self-assertion, and therefore he is distinguished;

from self-boasting, and therefore his merit is acknowledged;

from self-complacency, and therefore he acquires superiority.

It is because he is thus free from striving that therefore no one in the world is able to strive with him.

That saying of the ancients that 'the partial becomes complete' was not vainly spoken: - all real completion is comprehended under it.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Absolute vacancy)

Abstaining from speech marks him who is obeying the spontaneity of his nature.

A violent wind does not last for a whole morning; a sudden rain does not last for the whole day.

To whom is it that these (two) things are owing? To Heaven and Earth.

If Heaven and Earth cannot make such (spasmodic) actings last long, how much less can man!

Therefore when one is making the Dao his business, those who are also pursuing it, agree with him in it, and those who are making the manifestation of its course their object agree with him in that; while even those who are failing in both these things agree with him where they fail.

Hence, those with whom he agrees as to the Dao have the happiness of attaining to it; those with whom he agrees as to its manifestation have the happiness of attaining to it; and those with whom he agrees in their failure have also the happiness of attaining (to the Dao).

(But) when there is not faith sufficient (on his part), a want of faith (in him) ensues (on the part of the others).

who flatters himself achieves nothing who parades himself doesn't lead

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Painful graciousness)

He who stands on his tiptoes does not stand firm; he who stretches his legs does not walk (easily).

(So), he who displays himself does not shine; he who asserts his own views is not distinguished; he who vaunts himself does not find his merit acknowledged; he who is self- conceited has no superiority allowed to him.

Such conditions, viewed from the standpoint of the Dao, are like remnants of food, or a tumour on the body, which all dislike.

Hence those who pursue (the course) of the Dao do not adopt and allow them.

the Tao is great Heaven is great Earth is great the king is also great the realm contains four greats of these the king is one

Man imitates Earth Earth imitates Heaven Heaven imitates the Tao the Tao imitates itself

.

[Chinese Text Project’s translation]

(Representations of the mystery)

There was something undefined and complete, coming into existence before Heaven and Earth.

How still it was and formless, standing alone, and undergoing no change, reaching everywhere and in no danger (of being exhausted)!

It may be regarded as the Mother of all things.

I do not know its name, and I give it the designation of the Dao (the Way or Course).

Making an effort (further) to give it a name I call it The Great.

Great, it passes on (in constant flow). Passing on, it becomes remote. Having become remote, it returns.

Therefore the Dao is great; Heaven is great; Earth is great; and the (sage) king is also great.

In the universe there are four that are great, and the (sage) king is one of them.

Man takes his law from the Earth; the Earth takes its law from Heaven; Heaven takes its law from the Dao.

The law of the Dao is its being what it is.

That is the Middle Way, or acting without acting,

The heavy is the root of the light.

The unmoved (stillness) is the source of all movement.
.

Thus the Master (i.e. The teacher / leader / sage who acts without acting -- by being fully present here & now, and being more and more in accord with the empty non-dual Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now / U2T / U3S / Uopp / Middle Way free from all extremes & middle.)
travels all day without leaving home.

However splendid the views, she stays serenely in herself.

.

Why should the lord of the country flit about like a fool?

If you let yourself be blown to and fro, you lose touch with your root.

If you let restlessness move you, you lose touch with who you are.

.

(i.e. Example of not acting more and more in accord with the Tao / Ground / Reality as it is here & now.)
(i.e. Examples of grasping at, attachment to, being slave to ... this or that -- physical, conceptual, mental, individual, collective, cosmic --.)

[Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English’s translation:]

The heavy is the root of the light.

The still is the master of unrest.

Therefore the sage, traveling all day,

Does not lose sight of his baggage.

Though there are beautiful things to be seen,
